Idaho: A Brief Profile
Idaho, in the Pacific Northwest Region of USA is known as the Gem State because of its abundance of natural resources. Idaho is also called the Spud State, since it is the largest potato producer in the United States.
The name Idaho, likely came about as a result of a hoax – Idahoax. In the 1860s, the United States Congress was considering organizing a new territory in the Rocky Mountains when, eccentric lobbyist George M. Willing suggested the name "Idaho," which he claimed was derived from a Shoshone language term meaning "the sun comes from the mountains" or "gem of the mountains.” The name stuck. Willing later claimed that he had made up the name himself.
Idaho has a rich history that stems from native tribes, the Lewis and Clark Expedition and determined pioneers on the Oregon Trail. Modern Idaho has a friendly cosmopolitan atmosphere. Idaho’s rapid development is attributed to agriculture, manufacturing and tourism.
